Background:

Please note that Stein is from the anime version, there's a section at the end of the plot explanation that explains the canon divergence there.
Personality:
Franken Stein is sort of a classic mad scientist. He has an obsession with taking things apart which, as he proudly states while giving his own backstory, is something he was born with rather than something he gained due to some kind of trauma. He's pretty unapologetic about his enjoyment of dissecting (and even vivisecting) various subjects, although he does go through a character arc where he struggles with the idea that his obsession makes him some kind of monster. He goes through some dark stuff, eventually even teaming up with the villainous witch Medusa, but through the power of friendship (what anime is complete without that?) he ends up learning that it's okay to be his usual experiment-and-dissection happy self as long as he partakes in moderation.

Stein tends to oscillate between high-octane passion and low-key apathy when it comes to emotion. Overall he tends to be stoic and given to playful sarcasm. He's driven largely by scientific curiosity, viewing everything and everyone as a potential experiment. He seems to struggle with understanding emotion, to the point of seeming emotionally stunted--he and other characters agree that he isn't capable of experiencing love, though he does seem to at least try in some cases, and over the course of the series he makes several comments on how experiencing emotion startles him because it's rare. At one point after a run-in with Medusa he marvels at the feeling of fear he's feeling: "This is fear. That's good then, I had forgotten what it felt like".

With that being said, Stein is certainly capable of making and maintaining relationships with people. He shows obvious fondness for his students and seems to be on good terms with most of the other staffmembers of the DWMA, although they tend to ride him about his obsessive tendencies. While Stein is a very independent person and professes to hate people who blindly follow authority figures, he also believes that the world consists of no absolutes, and that there will always be authority figures who control what the truth is. For most of his life he's also had a deep-seated subconscious fear of himself, or rather the kind of person he could potentially be if he didn't hold back. This causes him to be most comfortable when he has an authority figure that he feels will keep him in check. In canon that role is filled primarily by Lord Death, with Stein seeing his friends Spirit and Marie as enforcers. Stein tends to put on a front in public, showing himself as a clueless professor type in order to keep people from being suspicious of him, and also occasionally as a platform for making bad jokes. Stein will be pulled to Empatheias right after the conclusion of his character arc, where he embraces the idea that his darker tendencies are a side-effect of his trying to suppress his urges to take things apart, so there will be plenty of room for him to grow in an emotional regard.

In terms of hobbies, Stein does actually have interests outside of dissection. He likes to build things, a good example being the security-camera mice that patrol his lab. He also seems to enjoy pulling pranks on people, although more often than not they're in poor taste, a fact that Stein either doesn't recognize or doesn't care about. A good example of this is the constant "made you look" gags he pulls on Spirit, making reference to their early years when Stein performed actual non-consensual experiments on Spirit's body. Stein also seems to enjoy research work, as he spends a bit of time in the DWMA's library surrounded by books. Of course, he also seems to really enjoy doing field work as a meister, and outside of that he practices martial arts to stay in shape and calm himself on bad days. He's also a chain smoker who can almost always be seen with a cigarette in his mouth, whether it's lit or not.

All in all, Stein is a gently emotionally stunted character with plenty of quirks who makes an effort, if not to fit in, at least to get along with other people. While he does suffer from bouts of apathy, he embraces emotions when he can in order to better understand them...yes, in the name of scientific discovery.

Abilities:
In canon, Stein is able to see other people's souls and derive character traits from studying them. Additionally, he can use his own soul to attack other people. However, given the nature of Empatheias and how it tends to alter people's abilities, this will work a little bit differently in the game.

In Empatheias when Stein uses his Soul Perception he will see soul-like structures, but rather than showing information about a person's character traits it will reveal their in-game alignment, and what emotions they're feeling at the moment. Similiarly, if Stein tries to lash out with his soul then the person he attacks will be stricken with a dose of whatever emotion he's feeling at the time.

In addition to his supernatural abilities outlined above, Stein is also proficient in martial arts and several different weapon styles. He is also a medical doctor with an implied specialty in surgery.

Alignment:
Stein's alignment will be with Thras. It was a tough decision for me but ultimately his character arc is about overcoming a fear of himself/his own potential so I think Thras is certainly appropriate.
